Arrival - The journey was worth it
We have arrived in sunny Guatemala, after a long journey, 24 hours door to door. We were greeted at the airport with a very warm welcome and were overwhelmed with the hospitality we received upon arrival. We then were introduced to our team ambassador Ty who brought us to our hotel. We walked into reception and were surprised to see an amazing detailed mural made especially for the NIBS competition, we knew then the lengths the college had gone to make this competition memorable and a massive success. To our surprise when we entered the hotel room we had received gift bags with various different items which again was lovely touch from the competition organisers.
Day 1 - every good day starts with an omelette
After a well deserved sleep we got up and took a tour of the hotel to see the fantastic facilities, then we were greeted with a beautiful spread for our breakfast and the best omelettes on the planet. Then our ambassador Ty picked us up and we were out for the day.
Firstly he took us to zone 16 know as La Cayala, a beautiful modern village with fantastic views of the city. This village showed the old and new style evident in Guatemala. We then had a few drinks while enjoying the sun. We then met up with another team Avans of the Netherlands and got some lunch. As our ambassadors know the area so well they took us to a beautiful place for lunch, where we all had traditional latin American food and it was very nice.
Then our ambassador took us to zone 4 to an area know as 4 Grados Norte. This area was described as having a more hipster vibe by our ambassador. We then met some of Ty's own friends from the USA who he knows from one of the American schools here in Guatemala City. The Avans team joined us again there for a few more beers. After this we went back to our hotel for a nice meal in one of the selection of restaurants within the hotel complex. 3 of the team members then proceeded onto a local disco while one team member could not go. The build up to the big day on Monday begins in earnest. We have been humbled by the reception we have received so far
Watch this space, big things are coming!
